Phuket handles 18.1 million passengers a year (2019, Airports of Thailand). Krabi handles 4.3 million. That ratio tells you everything about the crowds, the traffic, and the pace. Phuket International Airport (HKT) is a major hub with direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Delhi, and London. Krabi Airport (KBV) has a shorter list: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. If you are coming from Europe or Australia, you will almost certainly fly into HKT. The question is whether you then stay in Phuket or immediately take a road transfer to Krabi.

Andaman Coast First Trip Base: the Airport Transfer Reality

The ride from HKT to Patong Beach is 38 km and takes 45 to 90 minutes by taxi, costing 700 to 1000 THB. From HKT to Phuket Town is 32 km. The trip from KBV to Ao Nang is 25 km, 30 to 40 minutes, and costs 300 to 400 THB by shuttle. That 400 THB saving is real, and so is the half-hour difference in total travel time after a long flight. If you land after a red eye, the Krabi arrival is noticeably easier.

If you choose Phuket as your base and want to see Krabi's karsts anyway, the road journey between the two takes 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours by private car, or 3 to 4 hours by shared minivan. That is the better part of a day. The road distance is 160 km. You lose roughly half a day on that move. If you try to do a day trip to Railay Beach from Phuket, there is no direct ferry; you drive 2.5 to 3 hours to Ao Nang, then take a 15-minute longtail boat. Do not count on being back for dinner.

Krabi Airport to Ao Nang Is the Smoother Arrival

KBV is smaller, faster to exit, and the shuttle runs consistently. You do not deal with the same volume of tour touts. You pay 300 to 400 THB for the ride to Ao Nang, and you are on the beach inside 40 minutes. From HKT, even a pre-booked car to Kata takes 45 minutes. To Patong, expect the full 90 minutes if you hit afternoon traffic. Budget your first day accordingly.

Phuket or Krabi for Island Hopping: Which Base Cuts Your Ferry Time

Island hopping is the main event on the Andaman Coast, and your base determines how long you sit on a speedboat. Phi Phi Don is administratively part of Krabi province. That matters. The ferry from Krabi (Ao Nang Pier) to Phi Phi takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. The ferry from Phuket (Rassada or Chalong Pier) to Phi Phi takes 2 hours, and the same operator, Andaman Wave Master or Phi Phi Cruiser, runs both routes. The difference is half an hour each way, an hour total. That is one more beach hour per day trip.

For Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, Phuket has the advantage. Tours depart from Chalong Pier and take about 1.5 hours each way by longtail or speedboat, costing 2000 to 3500 THB. From Krabi, you need to drive north or take a longer boat. If James Bond Island is your priority, base yourself in Phuket.

For Railay Beach and the karst scenery that made you pick this coast, Krabi is the obvious base. Railay is a car-free peninsula accessed only by longtail boat from Ao Nang (15 minutes, 100 to 150 THB per person shared) or from Krabi Town pier. From Phuket, you spend 2.5 hours on the road just to reach the longtail pier. That is not a day trip worth doing.

Krabi vs Phuket Beaches: Sand, Slope, and Sheltered Water

Phuket beaches and Krabi beaches are different animals. Patong Beach is 2.8 km of light golden sand with a moderate seabed slope. It is the most developed beach on the island, lined with hotels, jet skis, and chair rentals. Kata and Karon offer pale golden sand and are family-friendly, with gentler surf depending on the season.

Ao Nang Beach in Krabi is 1.2 km of golden to tan sand with a shallow seabed slope, good for families with small children. But Ao Nang is a concrete-heavy strip, not a postcard beach. The real sand is at Railay West, which has white sand and is boat access only. If you want to swim from your hotel in clear water, you pick a Railay resort, not Ao Nang. The downside is that Railay gets a day-tripper tidal wave from 10:00 to 15:00. Stay overnight to have it to yourself at sunset.

If nightlife is a deciding factor, the choice is simple. Phuket's nightlife concentration is Bangla Road in Patong, a 400-metre strip with 40 to 50 venues. Legal closing time is 02:00, though licence variations push some places later. The party infrastructure is relentless. If you want loud, late, and crowded, Patong delivers.

Ao Nang nightlife is quieter and shorter. Bars cluster along the beach road and around Center Point, with 15 to 25 venues. Legal closing time is between midnight and 01:00, depending on the licence. It is a beach town with a few live music bars and reggae lounges, not a party destination. If you want to drink a beer on the beach and hear the waves, Ao Nang works. If you want a club night, you go to Phuket.

One practical note: the minimum drinking age is 20 in both provinces, and enforcement is inconsistent but present at larger venues. Do not hand your passport as collateral at a bar; bar scams with fake damage charges are a known local friction in Phuket and Bali, and the same precaution applies everywhere.

Accommodation and Food

Krabi is cheaper across the board. A 3-star hotel in peak season (December to February) in Phuket runs 1500 to 3500 THB per night. The same tier in Krabi runs 1000 to 2500 THB. Do not schedule a same-day flight after a ferry ride in monsoon; you will likely miss it.

Splitting the Trip: When Two Bases Make Sense

A common 7-day itinerary splits 3 nights in Phuket and 4 in Krabi or Phi Phi, or the reverse. The case for splitting is that you get different beach character, Krabi's karst scenery, Railay access, lower cost in Krabi, and Phuket's nightlife and flight hub. The case against splitting is that you lose a travel day: 3 to 4 hours door to door between the two, plus packing and unpacking. In monsoon, ferry uncertainty adds risk. If you have 10 days minimum, a split works. With less than a week, pick one base and do day trips.

If you land at HKT and are not staying in Phuket, book a shared minivan to Krabi or Ao Nang in advance; the walk-up price at the airport is higher and the wait longer. If you pick Krabi, book a room on the Railay side of the peninsula for the best beach, not in the concrete-heavy strip of Ao Nang.
