You check out of your bungalow on Koh Phi Phi at 09:00, drag your bag across the sand to Tonsai Pier, wait 45 minutes for a ferry that arrives 20 minutes late, ride two hours to Krabi, queue for a minivan, and finally reach Ao Nang at 15:30. That day is gone. You did nothing but move. The single most expensive thing in Southeast Asia is not a resort or a flight. It is a transfer day that eats your beach time.

Realistic Thailand and Bali itineraries start with the minimum days rule: 10 days minimum, no exceptions. Any shorter trip burns too many hours on ferry pier handoffs and checkout logistics to experience more than two stops. Back to back two-night stays across three islands leave you with almost no beach time because every second day is a transit day. Three frameworks work: a 10-day single-coast loop, a 14-day two-coast sampler, and a 21-day route that adds Bali without the common mistake of trying Phuket, Koh Samui, and Bali in a fortnight.

The Hard Rule: 10 Days Minimum, Three Stops Maximum

In 10 days you can visit three locations on a single coast. Push that to four and you spend roughly 40% of your trip in transit. A 10-day Andaman route racks up 8 to 10 hours of total transfer time. That sounds manageable until you realise those hours fall across three separate days, each one requiring hotel checkout, pier arrival 30 minutes early, waiting for late boats, and the final ride to your next bed. A journey from Phuket to Koh Samui by bus and ferry takes 6 to 8 hours. That is not a morning. That is your entire day.

Three stops in two weeks is the hard maximum for a Thailand and Bali combined trip. The 21-day Thailand, Bali sample sequence hits 5 to 6 stops but consumes 18 to 22 hours of transfer time including a full flight day from Krabi to Bali via Bangkok. That flight day counts as a lost day. Budget for it.

Two-Week Thailand, Bali Itinerary: the Single-Coast Loop (10 Days)

If you have 10 days, stay on one coast. Do not cross from the Andaman to the Gulf. The 10-day Andaman route sample sequence is Phuket (3 nights), Koh Phi Phi (2 nights), Krabi or Railay (3 nights), then depart from Phuket or Krabi airport.

Phuket: 3 Nights

Land at HKT airport. Take a taxi to Kata or Karon, not Patong, if you want family-friendly beaches with less noise. Kata is 45 to 90 minutes from the airport and costs 700 to 1000 THB. Spend day one recovering. Day two take a day trip to Phang Nga Bay for the karst-studded seascape; long-tail tours run 2000 to 3500 THB and take about 5 hours. Day three explore the south or just sit on Kata beach.

Koh Phi Phi: 2 Nights

Catch the first ferry from Phuket Rassada pier, departing around 08:30, arriving in 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. You land on Tonsai, which is party central. If that is not your scene, book a bungalow on the far side of the island near Long Beach. Day two take a long-tail to Phi Phi Leh to see Maya Bay, but check its current status before you go, it closes periodically for rehabilitation. Ferry transfers eat this day. The last ferry from Phi Phi to Krabi departs around 15:30.

Krabi or Railay: 3 Nights

Ferry from Phi Phi to Krabi Klong Jilad pier takes 1.5 to 2 hours. From there take a long-tail to Railay, 10 to 15 minutes. Railay is a car-free peninsula with climbing and a lagoon. You need 3 nights here for the climbing and lagoon itinerary. Book a bungalow near the east side for cheaper rates. Long-tail boats run roughly 06:00 to 18:00. Day two hike to the lagoon or climb. Day three ferry back to Krabi town for your flight out of KBV airport. Total transfer time for this route: 8 to 10 hours.

Two-Week Thailand Itinerary: Two-Coast Sampler (14 Days)

With 14 days you can sample two coasts, but you must fly between them. The 14-day Gulf-side route sample sequence is Koh Samui (5 nights), Koh Phangan (3 nights), Koh Tao (4 nights), then depart from Samui airport USM. Total transfer time for this route is 5 to 6 hours, far less than the Andaman route because the Gulf islands sit close to each other.

Koh Samui: 5 Nights

Fly into USM airport. Take a shared minivan to Chaweng or Lamai, 20 to 30 minutes, 200 to 300 THB. Chaweng has a long beach and a full-service resort strip. Day two rent a scooter, 100 to 250 THB per day, to see Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem. Day three take a speedboat day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park, 1 hour each way, 2000 to 3000 THB. Days four and five are for sitting on the beach or diving. Avoid the monsoon window of October to mid-December when heavy rain peaks.

Koh Phangan: 3 Nights

Ferry from Samui to Phangan takes 30 minutes. If you are coming for the Full Moon Party, book 3 nights minimum: the night before, night of, and a recovery day. Accommodation near Haad Rin triples during the event. Outside of full moon week, Phangan is sleepy with good snorkelling on the north coast.

Koh Tao: 4 Nights

Catamaran from Phangan to Koh Tao takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Sairee Beach is the dive-school HQ and backpacker social hub. The minimum stay for Open Water diving certification is 3.5 to 4 days, so book 4 nights. Fun dives cost 800 to 1200 THB per dive. Day trip to Koh Nang Yuan by long-tail takes 15 minutes and costs 300 THB return. The last ferry back to Samui departs around 15:00. Factor in 18 hours no-fly time after your last dive if you are flying out of USM.

Three-Week Thailand Itinerary: Adding the Gulf Coast

If you have three weeks, you can combine the Andaman and Gulf coasts into one trip, but you must fly the long connection. Bali and Thai Islands Route: the 21-Day Thailand Plus Bali Itinerary

Adding Bali to a Thailand trip requires a minimum of 21 days. The 21-day Thailand, Bali route sample sequence is Phuket (3 nights), Koh Phi Phi (2 nights), Krabi (3 nights), fly Krabi to Bali via Bangkok (1 full day lost to transit), then Ubud (4 nights), Seminyak (3 nights), Uluwatu (3 nights). Total transfer time is 18 to 22 hours.

The Flight Day

There is no direct flight from Krabi to Bali. You connect through Bangkok, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. The AirAsia direct flight from Phuket to Bali is seasonal and runs 3 to 4 times per week, check schedules. The flight itself is 4 hours but the full day includes hotel checkout, the ride to the airport, the flight, immigration at DPS which can exceed 90 minutes, and the drive to your first Bali base. Budget an entire day for this move.

Bali: 10 Nights

Start in Ubud for 4 nights. The drive from DPS to Ubud is 1 to 1.5 hours; fixed-rate taxi costs 350,000 to 500,000 IDR. Day two visit the Sacred Monkey Forest and Tegallalang Rice Terraces, entry 80,000 IDR and 25,000 IDR respectively. Day three hire a private car to the east coast for a day trip to Amed, 2 to 2.5 hours each way, for black-sand snorkelling. Day four explore Ubud temples.

Move to Seminyak for 3 nights. Drive from Ubud to Seminyak takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Seminyak has upscale dining and beach clubs. Day two take a day trip to Uluwatu Temple at sunset, 50,000 IDR entry, watch for aggressive monkeys.

Finish in Uluwatu for 3 nights. Drive from Seminyak to Uluwatu takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. Uluwatu has cliff-top temples and surf breaks. If you have time, add a day trip to Nusa Penida from Sanur harbour, 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat, last boat back at 16:30. Nusa Penida roads are severely potholed and unlit, a medical evacuation takes hours.

Southeast Asia Island Hopping Plan: What Not to Do

The most common mistake travellers make is trying Phuket, Koh Samui, and Bali in two weeks. That is three destinations across two countries with a flight between each and a ferry in the middle. You lose three full days to transit. You spend more time checking in and out than lying on a beach.

A 14-day Bali route with 3 to 4 bases works because you stay within one island. The sample sequence is Seminyak (3 nights), Ubud (4 nights), Uluwatu (3 nights), Sanur (2 nights) with a Nusa Penida day trip. Total transfer time is 8 to 10 hours, all by road. You lose only one half-day per move, not a full day.

For two weeks, pick one country. Thailand alone or Bali alone. Save the Thailand, Bali combined trip for three weeks or more.

Thailand, Bali Combined Trip: the Monsoon Trap

Timing matters more than route. The Andaman coast, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, has its monsoon window from May to October. Rough seas cancel ferries and close dive sites. The Gulf coast, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, has heavy rain from October to mid-December. Bali has its rainy season from November to March.

If you plan a Thailand, Bali combined trip in July, the Andaman coast is in monsoon but the Gulf coast and Bali are in dry season. Fly into Samui, skip Phuket, and do the Gulf loop plus Bali. If you travel in January, the Andaman coast and Bali are in high season but the Gulf coast is in its monsoon window. Do Phuket, Krabi, and Bali. Never assume the entire region has good weather at the same time. Check the monsoon window for each specific coast before you book.

Ferry Transfer Day: What Actually Happens

A ferry transfer day is not two hours. It is the full time between checkout and check-in. Here is the real sequence for a Phuket to Koh Phi Phi move:

• Checkout at 09:00, store luggage or keep it with you.
• Taxi from Kata to Rassada pier, 45 to 60 minutes.
• Arrive at the pier 30 minutes before departure.
• Sit on the pier until the ferry arrives, often late.
• Ferry ride: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
• Disembark at Tonsai and walk to your accommodation, 10 to 20 minutes.
• Check in around 13:30 or 14:00.

That is five hours from door to door. You cannot go for a swim before lunch. You cannot visit a viewpoint. The day is gone. Plan for it. Book afternoon arrival activities only and never schedule a ferry departure that connects to a flight on the same day. If your ferry from Koh Tao to Samui departs at 15:00 and your flight from USM is at 17:00, you miss the flight. The last ferry from Koh Tao to Samui departs around 15:00. Book an overnight in Samui before your flight.

Practical Next Step: Book One Coast, Add Days

Open a calendar and count your nights. If you have fewer than 10 nights, pick one coast in Thailand or one region of Bali. If you have 10 to 13 nights, do the Andaman loop, Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Railay, or the Gulf loop, Samui, Phangan, Tao. If you have 14 to 20 nights, add the other Thai coast by flying between them. If you have 21 nights or more, add Bali. Write the ferry times into your calendar as real blocks. If you cannot fit a transfer day without cutting beach time, cut a stop. The beach is why you came.
