If you want a single upmarket choice for a first visit, choose Choeng Mon Beach, 1 km of shallow water and quiet, more expensive resorts. Chaweng is the obvious answer for first timers who prefer walking distance over quiet mornings. Maenam is the answer for first timers who want a relaxed version of the same island.

Samui Airport Transfer to Beach: the Practical Path

Walk out of USM baggage claim and ignore the private taxi touts. Walk past them to the shared minivan counter. The fare to Chaweng or Lamai is 200 to 300 THB, the ride is 20 to 30 minutes, and the driver will drop you at your hotel door if it is on the ring road or within a short turn off it. If you are staying on the northern beaches Bophut, Maenam, Choeng Mon the shared minivan fare stays similar but the ride stretches to about 45 minutes. Ang Thong Marine Park is a 40 island archipelago of limestone karsts, emerald lagoons and kayak channels. You cannot stay overnight in the park. The standard tour from Samui is a speedboat day trip that takes about 1 hour each way from the Samui mainland. The Northern Beaches: Maenam and Choeng Mon for Families

Maenam Beach runs 5 km along the north coast. The water gradient is gradual, the current is mild and the views look directly across at Koh Phangan. For a family with children who want to swim without a constant lookout for jet ski traffic, Maenam is the zone. Accommodation here leans toward mid range bungalow resorts and small hotels. A room within 100 metres of the sand costs 1,500 to 3,000 THB in dry season. The trade is that Maenam has no nightlife to speak of and the restaurant strip is thin. You will eat at your resort or at one of the handful of grilled seafood beach shacks set up by the local fishing families. Choeng Mon Beach is 1 km of sand in a protected bay on the northeast coast. The water stays shallow for 50 metres out, making it safe for non swimmers. The resorts here are upmarket, quieter and more expensive. A night in high season runs above 8,000 THB at a five star property. If you want isolation with a ring road connection to the main action, Choeng Mon is the answer. If you want the same safety in the water at half the price, Maenam is the answer.

Getting Around: the Ring Road and the Scooter Decision

The ring road circles the island at roughly 51 km. On two wheels, you can reach any beach in 30 to 45 minutes. Rent from a shop with a solid Google rating and photograph every panel of the bike and the fuel gauge at pickup. Scooter scams exist on Samui: owners claiming pre existing damage when you return the bike and demanding cash payment. The standard daily rental runs 100 to 250 THB in low season. If you want empty sand, go to the far end of Maenam or book a private villa in the hills. If you want rock bottom budget travel, Samui costs more than the mainland and the difference shows in the accommodation rates: budget at 400 to 800 THB, mid range at 1,500 to 4,000 THB, high end from 8,000 to over 50,000 THB a night.

Scheduling back to back 2 night stays on three islands leaves you with almost no beach time. Samui is the base. Use it that way.

Samui dry season runs from January to September. The wettest months are October, November and December, with November and early December bringing the heaviest rainfall and rough seas that can cancel ferries and close beachfront shacks. Peak season December to February and July to August drives up accommodation prices and fills the sand with European and Australian school holiday crowds. If you can travel in March, April, May or June, you get drier weather, emptier beaches and mid range rates closer to 1,500 THB a night. What You Sacrifice for the Airport

Samui is the Gulf Coast island with an airport. That changes everything, and not every change is a gain. What you lose for the convenience of that 25 minute transfer is roughness, grit and solitude. The island is built around direct flights and resort stays. The backpacker density that defines Koh Phi Phi and the party strip of Koh Phangan is replaced on Samui by mid range comfort and package tour infrastructure. You will not find a 200 THB bungalow over the water here. You will not find untouched coastal jungle or a quiet cove without a ride on two wheels to reach it. Maenam and Choeng Mon deliver quiet, but they deliver a resort version of quiet, not a wilderness version. The east side of the island is developed. The west side is still sparse but the swimming is poor. If you want a truly undeveloped Gulf island, skip Samui and go to the far side of Koh Tao or take the ferry to Koh Phangan and head to the north coast. If you want an island that works around a flight schedule, good restaurants, reliable 4G and a range of beach types from 7 km of noise to 5 km of family shallows, Samui is the easy answer. Just do not expect it to feel isolated.
