Indonesia Itineraries That Fit 10 Days, Two Weeks, or Three Weeks

A traveller at Padang Bai harbour watches the 08:00 fast boat to the Gilis slide away without them because they arrived at 07:55 and the ticket window had a 25 person queue. That is the reality of inter island transit in Indonesia. A 40 km journey across the Lombok Strait can consume half a day when you add check in, sea state delays, and the transfer from port to guesthouse.

These Indonesia itineraries are built around that friction. Each route names specific ports, boat types, and realistic transfer times instead of vague suggestions. The 10 day version is a hard truth: pick two bases maximum. The three week version finally earns the right to touch four stops. Every day count assumes you arrive at DPS and depart from DPS or LOP or CGK depending on the route.

10 Day Bali Lombok Itinerary: Two Bases, No Exceptions

You have 10 days. You land at DPS. You leave from DPS. You get two islands. That is non negotiable. A third stop adds at least two transit days you do not have.

Allocate 5 to 6 nights in Bali and 4 nights split between the big party island of Gili T and its quieter neighbour Gili Air. That gives you a cumulative transfer time of 5 to 8 hours across the trip, manageable for a first timer.

Bali: 5 Nights, Choose One Region

Base yourself in one area. Ubud demands 2 nights minimum for the rice terraces and temple circuit. Seminyak or Canggu works for surf and beach clubs. Use a Gojek for short trips but walk to a main road for pickup because drivers are banned from many temples and beach access points. Pay cash for the ride, not the app, when the driver offers you the meter off app rate.

Book a buffer night before your boat departure. Do not schedule the fast boat for the morning after a late flight. The fast boats from Serangan or Padang Bai to the Gilis run 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes depending on sea state, and the ticket office wants you there 45 minutes before departure.

Gili Trawangan: 2 Nights

Take a fast boat from Padang Bai to Bangsal harbour, then a public boat to the island. The crossing from Bangsal takes 20 to 45 minutes. No cars on the island. Rent a scooter or bicycle. Cash is king here. ATMs run dry on weekends and cards are refused at guesthouses. The party strip runs south east, the quiet beaches run north west. For the swing photos, arrive before 08:00 to avoid the queue.

Gili Air: 2 Nights

Public boat from the larger island takes 5 to 10 minutes. Gili Air is the couples compromise: quieter bars than its neighbour but still social. Snorkel the turtle point off the east coast. Accommodation is cash only at most places. Data is patchier than on the busier island. Download offline maps before you leave Bali.

The return to DPS involves a public boat back to Bangsal, a fast boat across the strait, and a taxi from Padang Bai to the airport. Budget 5 hours for the return transit morning. Do not book a flight before 14:00 on departure day.

Two Week Indonesia Route: Bali, Gili Trawangan, and Lombok

With 14 days you can add Lombok without wrecking the trip. The cumulative transfer time runs 8 to 12 hours. Start at DPS and end at DPS or LOP depending on your final flight.

Allocate 5 to 6 nights in Bali, 2 to 3 nights on the main Gili, and 4 to 5 nights on Lombok. The transit days sit between Bali and the Gilis and between the Gilis and Lombok.

Bali: 5 To 6 Nights

Same rule as the 10 day version: pick one base. If you want Ubud and the coast, choose Ubud for 3 nights and Seminyak for 2 to 3 nights with a transit day between them. Bali traffic in the Kuta Canggu corridor turns a 10 km trip into 90 minutes after 16:00. Plan day trips around that schedule, not against it.

Gili Trawangan: 2 To 3 Nights

Fast boat from Padang Bai to the island. Book the earliest crossing to avoid afternoon swell. Sea state turns rough July to August and December to February. Delays and cancellations are routine. If the forecast shows wind over 25 knots, postpone by a day.

Lombok: 4 To 5 Nights

Public boat from Bangsal to Lombok takes 20 to 45 minutes. From Bangsal harbour, take a taxi or ride hail to Kuta Lombok in the south. Kuta Lombok is raw coastline with empty white bays and surf breaks. Tanjung Aan Beach is 15 minutes by scooter. Tiu Kelep Waterfall requires a 30 minute walk through jungle. Mount Rinjani trek requires a multi day permit and guide booked in advance.

The route works outbound: Bali to Gilis by fast boat, Gilis to Lombok by public boat. Outbound costs less than a direct fast boat from Bali to Lombok and lets you drop your bags on the Gilis first. Depart from LOP. A 40 minute flight from LOP to DPS connects to your international departure. Budget one night in Kuta Lombok near the airport before your flight.

Three Week Indonesia Trip Plan Option A: Bali, Gilis, Lombok, and Java

Three weeks gives you time for four stops. Option A runs from DPS to CGK, covering Bali, the main Gili, Lombok, and Yogyakarta on Java. Cumulative transfer time: 16 to 22 hours. Option B trades Java for Flores.

Allocate 5 to 6 nights Bali, 2 to 3 nights on the party island, 4 to 5 nights Lombok, 3 to 4 nights Yogyakarta, and 1 night Jakarta.

Bali To Lombok Via The Gilis

Follow the two week route through the first three stops. The transit sequence is the same: fast boat Padang Bai to the Gilis, public boat Bangsal to Lombok, then scooter or taxi around Lombok.

Lombok To Yogyakarta

Fly from LOP to JOG via CGK or direct on a single carrier. The flight time Lombok to Jakarta is 1 hour 50 minutes, then Jakarta to Yogyakarta is 1 hour 10 minutes by air or 6 to 7 hours by train from Gambir station to Tugu station. The train is more comfortable than the domestic flight with security and baggage waits. Book the executive class carriage on the Argo Wilis or Taksaka for reclining seats and included meal.

Yogyakarta minimum stay is 3 nights. Visit Borobudur at sunrise before the crowds. Book the temple access ticket online two weeks ahead in peak season. The city runs on cash and Gojek. Jakarta gets 1 night as a transit stop. Stay near Gambir station if you arrive by train, or near the airport if you fly out. Jakarta air pollution hits hazardous levels June to September; avoid outdoor sightseeing those months if you have respiratory issues.

End at CGK. The flight from JOG to CGK takes 1 hour 10 minutes, plus 20 minutes for the airport rail link to BNI City station costing 50,000 IDR. If your international flight departs CGK before 12:00, spend the final night at an airport hotel rather than central Jakarta.

Three Week Indonesia Trip Plan Option B: Bali, Gilis, Lombok, and Flores

Option B trades Java for Flores and keeps you in WITA time zone throughout. Cumulative transfer time: 12 to 16 hours. Start and end at DPS.

Allocate 5 to 6 nights Bali, 2 to 3 nights on the main Gili, 4 to 5 nights Lombok, and 3 to 4 nights in Labuan Bajo on Flores.

Lombok To Flores

Fly from LOP to Labuan Bajo via DPS. The flight DPS to Labuan Bajo takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Add the Lombok to DPS leg and you budget a full transit day. Book a morning departure from Kuta Lombok and an afternoon flight from DPS to Labuan Bajo.

Labuan Bajo is the departure point for Komodo National Park. Minimum stay is 3 nights. Day tours to see Komodo dragons run by speedboat and cost 500,000 to 1,500,000 IDR depending on boat size and passenger numbers. The best snorkelling is at Pink Beach and Manta Point. Wet season runs November to March; dry season April to October is optimal for sea conditions.

Flores is less developed than Bali or Lombok. ATMs in Labuan Bajo run low on weekends. Bring enough cash for 3 days of activities. Telkomsel SIM works well in town but data drops on boat trips and at park entry points.

End at DPS. The flight Labuan Bajo to DPS takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Budget one buffer night in South Bali before your international departure. Sanur is quieter than Seminyak and closer to the airport at 20 minutes by taxi for 150,000 IDR.

Island Hopping Indonesia Route: Practical Logistics

Every island hop in Indonesia follows the same pattern: accommodation check out, taxi or scooter to harbour, ticket queue, boat crossing, arrival queue, taxi to next guesthouse. That sequence costs 3 to 5 hours per move even when the water crossing is only 40 minutes.

Common mistakes include booking three islands in 7 days, scheduling a transit day without a buffer night, and arriving at the harbour without cash. Fast boat tickets from Padang Bai to the Gilis cost 250,000 to 450,000 IDR one way in dry season. Public boats from Bangsal to the Gilis cost 50,000 IDR per person. Always pay the harbour fee separately at the official booth, not to a tout.

When The Boat Does Not Go

Sea state cancels crossings. July to August and December to February see the most cancellations. If your fast boat is cancelled, the public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar takes 4 to 6 hours and runs more reliably in poor weather. From Lembar take a taxi to Bangsal for the Gilis or to Kuta Lombok for the south coast. This adds 3 to 5 hours to your journey but keeps you moving. Do not book a non refundable flight or tour for the day after a boat crossing.

Scooter Rental And Ride Hails

Scooter rental in Bali costs 50,000 to 80,000 IDR per day. Rental in Lombok costs 60,000 to 90,000 IDR. On the main Gili island rental is 40,000 to 60,000 IDR per day. Do not rent a scooter if you have no experience with left side traffic and aggressive driving. Fatal accidents involving tourists are common. Use Gojek for short trips instead.

Gojek drivers are banned from picking up at many tourist hubs, temples, and some beaches in Bali. Walk to a main road before ordering. If you use a local driver at the site, expect to pay 2 to 3 times the app price. Negotiate before getting in the vehicle.

Transit Day Survival: What to Pack and What to Skip

A transit day in Indonesia is not a rest day. Pack a dry bag for electronics because fast boat spray soaks backpacks on the upper deck. Carry cash for harbour fees, boat tickets, and the taxi at the far end because ATMs at Bangsal and Padang Bai run dry on weekends. Carry toilet paper because port toilets rarely stock it. Download offline maps for the arrival island before you lose signal at sea.

Skip the day trip that returns you to the same island you just left. Do not try to see Nusa Penida as a side trip from Bali if you leave for the Gilis the next morning. The fast boat to Nusa Penida takes 45 minutes, the roads on the island are punishing, and the tour returns at 17:00. That leaves you packing for the Gilis at 22:00 with a 07:00 boat the next morning. You will burn out by day four.

Skip booking a hotel with a strict cancellation policy on transit nights. If the sea cancels your crossing, you lose one night of accommodation. Book refundable rooms at guesthouses that accept WhatsApp bookings, because the hotel expects you to use WhatsApp for confirmations and changes.

Food Worth a Detour on Each Island

Indonesia delivers sensory overload through its food markets and warungs. In Lombok, ayam taliwang is grilled chicken with a fiery chilli paste served with plecing kangkung. Sate rembiga is spiced beef satay with a coconut milk marinade. Both are available at warungs in Kuta Lombok for 30,000 to 50,000 IDR per portion. In Bali, babi guling is spit roasted pig with crackling and blood sausage, best eaten at warungs before noon. Nasi campur Bali is a mixed rice plate with lawar, sambal, and shredded spiced meat, available everywhere for 25,000 to 40,000 IDR. On the main Gili island, the nightly seafood barbecue on the beach serves fresh snapper, tuna, and lobster. Negotiate the price before they grill it. Expect to pay 100,000 to 200,000 IDR for a full plate.

Who These Routes Suit and Who Should Skip

These itineraries suit first time Southeast Asia visitors who want infrastructure with their adventure. They suit surfers chasing breaks from beginner to reef. They suit digital nomads who need reliable Wi Fi and a like minded community. They suit honeymooners wanting dramatic landscapes without total isolation. They suit party travellers who treat sunset as a starting gun. They do not suit travellers seeking untouched culture or solitude. Bali southern core is a megaphone of development and Lombok south coast is being sold as the next Bali. Anyone who needs crisp efficiency or hates haggling should skip Indonesia entirely. The transaction cost in time and mental energy is real.

The single thing that most often goes wrong here is underestimating inter island transit time. Travellers book three islands in seven days and spend half the trip staring at ferry terminals, port waiting rooms, and airport security queues. Do not be that traveller. Pick your number of bases and stick to it.
