A seven-day trip is Istanbul plus exactly one other stop. That second stop is either Cappadocia or a coastal city, never both. Ten days buys two internal moves. Two weeks buys three. Every draft itinerary must account for the door-to-door friction of domestic flights, the balloon cancellation buffer day in Goreme, and the fact that an overnight bus steals a shower and a morning. The question is how many stops you can realistically fit without burning half the trip on transit.

The Maths of Moving: Transfer Days Eat Everything

Every internal move in Turkey costs most of a day. A domestic flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia or to Antalya runs 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in the air. The real time is airport transfer plus check-in plus baggage claim plus hotel transfer. Budget 5 hours from your Istanbul hotel door to your Cappadocia hotel door for a flight. Budget 7 hours if you use the Asian-side airport SAW instead of IST. An overnight bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia or from Cappadocia to Antalya takes 10 to 12 hours and leaves you needing a shower, a breakfast stop, and a nap before you do anything. That bus does not save a day. It steals a morning.

An overnight bus costs 200 to 400 TRY and saves one night’s accommodation. It does not save time. A domestic flight costs 400 to 1200 TRY one way. The decision is budget versus usable hours. On a seven-day trip, one move is all you have. On ten days, two moves force you to choose between a flight and a bus. On fourteen days, three moves require one bus or a very tight flight sequence.

Turkey 7 Day Itinerary: Istanbul Plus One Stop, No Debate

A seven-day itinerary has room for exactly two bases. Istanbul takes four nights minimum: three full days for Sultanahmet, the Bosphorus, and a neighbourhood walk. The remaining three nights go to one other stop. That stop is either Cappadocia or a coastal city such as Antalya, Fethiye, or Kas. It is not both.

Option A: Istanbul and Cappadocia (7 Days)

Fly from Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevsehir on day 4 morning. The shuttle to Goreme takes 60 to 90 minutes. Three nights in the region gives you two full days. Day 5 is the balloon flight, and you need a buffer day because cancellations happen in high wind roughly one morning in four. If your balloon cancels on day 5, you have day 6 as your backup. Day 6 also covers the Goreme Open Air Museum, a valley hike, and a sunset point. Day 7 fly back to Istanbul for your departure. Do not book your international flight out of Istanbul before 4pm on day 7. Delays from Cappadocia are common.

Option B: Istanbul and Antalya (7 Days)

Fly from Istanbul to Antalya on day 4 morning. The ride to Kaleici takes 30 minutes. Three nights gives you two full days. Day 5 covers Perge and Aspendos or a boat trip from the old harbour. Day 6 is a beach day or a walk on the Lycian Way section at Olympos. Day 7 fly back to Istanbul. This itinerary works for travellers who want the sea but do not want to sacrifice Istanbul. It does not work for anyone who wants Cappadocia too. That is a different trip.

Turkey 10 Day Itinerary: Two Internal Moves, Three Bases

Ten days buys two internal moves and three bases. The classic route is Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the coast. The sequence matters for transfer efficiency.

The Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya Route: 10 Days

Land in Istanbul. Spend four nights. Day 1 arrival, jet lag management, a short walk in Sultanahmet. Days 2 and 3 cover Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar, and a Bosphorus ferry. Day 4 morning fly to Cappadocia. Three nights in Goreme. Day 5 balloon flight with a buffer. Day 6 valleys and cave churches. Day 7 take the overnight bus from Nevsehir to Antalya. The bus departs around 9pm and arrives around 7am. You lose the night but gain a full day on the coast. Day 8 arrive in the city, check into Kaleici, shower, breakfast, then a full day at the beach or ruins. Day 9 a second coast day. Day 10 fly from Antalya to Istanbul or directly home. Antalya Airport has direct international flights in summer, which saves the Istanbul backtrack.

What You Lose With the Overnight Bus

The overnight bus from Cappadocia to Antalya steals your shower and your morning. You arrive at 7am. Most hotels in Kaleici do not allow early check-in before noon. Budget for a luggage storage fee (20 to 40 TRY) and a cafe breakfast near the clock tower. Do not schedule a boat trip on day 8 morning. You need that window to reset.

Alternative: Skip the Bus, Add a Flight

If the overnight bus sounds miserable, fly from Kayseri to Antalya via Istanbul. That costs two flight segments and 6 hours of transfer time. The bus is the better use of a 10-day window. Accept the discomfort or extend to 14 days.

Turkey 14 Day Itinerary: Three Moves, Four Bases, One Bus

Fourteen days gives you three internal moves and four bases. The most efficient use of that time is Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Lycian coast, and a final coastal stop.

The 14 Day Route

Istanbul: 4 nights. Fly to Cappadocia: 3 nights. Overnight bus to Antalya: 1 night on the bus. Antalya or Kas: 3 nights. Fethiye: 3 nights. Fly from Dalaman to Istanbul or direct home.

Day 1 to 4 in Istanbul. Day 5 fly to Cappadocia. Day 6 balloon with buffer. Day 7 valleys. Day 8 overnight bus to Antalya. Day 9 arrive, transfer to Kas (3 hours by road) or stay in Kaleici. Day 10 and 11 coast days: Lycian Way hiking, boat trips, beach. Day 12 drive or bus to Fethiye (3 hours). Day 13 Fethiye: Oludeniz beach, paragliding, or Saklikent Gorge. Day 14 fly from Dalaman Airport.

Why Fethiye and Not a Second Coast Town

Fethiye and Antalya are 3 hours apart by road. You can base in Kas between them and have three distinct coast experiences without overlapping scenery. Kas is quieter than Antalya, better for swimming, and closer to the best Lycian Way sections. Fethiye has the paragliding and the lagoon. Antalya has the Roman ruins. The three coast bases eat two transfer days but deliver three different coast experiences.

The Balloon Cancellation Buffer Is Not Optional

Balloon flights in Cappadocia cancel roughly 25 percent of mornings due to wind. If you book three nights, you have two possible mornings. If you book two nights, you have one morning and no backup. On a 14-day trip, three nights in Goreme costs one extra night but guarantees you fly. That buffer day is the difference between seeing Cappadocia from the air and seeing it from the ground. Book the third night.
